As the 3rd largest Sate Park in Wisconsin with about 8 miles of Green Bay Shoreline, you bet this one was high on our list.  Peninsula has multiple levels of trails  ranging from easy to difficult.  The Sunset Bike Route is unique in the sense that it allows bikes, wheelchairs and hikers.  Don’t forget to bring your camera if you decide to climb the Eagle Tower or take a tour of the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse.

2.  Cave Point County Park

A little hidden treasure is Cave Point County Park located along Lake Michigan near Jacksonport.  The beautiful limestone ledges and underwater caves  make these hiking trails some of the most scenic and serene.  The fairly easy trails make for a relaxing afternoon so be sure to pack a lunch and stay for a family picnic to complete your adventure.

3.   Newport State Park

Yes!  You knew we had to pick Newport State Park for our serious backpack campers!  Located at the tip of Door Peninsula near Ellison Bay, this park features 30 miles of foot trails and 11 stunning miles of Lake Michigan shoreline.  Our favorite “day hike” is the Europe Bay Trail, which is approximately 7 miles and will take about 3 hours to complete, longer if you are like us and like to soak of the sounds of nature and take tons of photos.

4.   Whitefish Dunes Sate Park

If you love soft sandy beaches, this is the place for you.  Whitefish Dunes State Park is located on the eastern shore of the Door County Peninsula near Jacksonport, which is right next to Cave Point County Park.  At Whitefish Dunes you have quite a few places to explore.  You can enjoy the beautiful views as you walk out on the rock shelf shore, relax on the soft sands of Leopold Beach or visit the steep forested dunes along the shores of Lake Michigan.  Make sure to check out the Red Trail.  It is less than 3 miles long and makes a stop at “Old Baldy” which is the tallest dune in the park, and with a name like “Old Baldy”, it’s definitely worth the hike.

5.  Potawatomi State Park

On the eastern trail head of the Ice Age Trail, you will find Potawatomi State Park.  The Ice Age Trail is a 1,000 mile journey that winds along the edge of the last continental glacier in Wisconsin, so if that is too adventurous for one day, Potawatomi State Park has a fun and educational 2.8 mile trail that will be just as beautiful and full of surprises.   If you get to the observation tower on a clear day, the view reaches almost 16 miles.
